Gurduara Janam Asthan Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj, Cheema Sahib (Sangrur)
This sacred place marks the birthplace of the great Brahm Giani Siriman Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji Maharaj of the 20th century, who was born on March 17, 1866 [1, 2]. His father was S. Karam Singh Ji and his mother was Mata Bholi Kaur Ji [2, 3].
In 1959, Sant Teja Singh Ji initiated the Sewa (service) of the Gurduara Sahib at this location, starting with a few houses in the vicinity [3]. He proclaimed that the birthplace of Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj, who performed कठिन जप-तप साध (intense meditation) and great efforts for the benefit of mankind, should be as beautiful and high as possible [3]. Following the wishes of the Sangat, the Akal Sewa (eternal service) for the construction of 9 मंजिला गुरु-घर (nine-story Guru’s house) commenced [3]. By the Will of God, the Sewa of the first four stories was completed [3].
Sant Teja Singh Ji passed away in Cheema Sahib on July 3, 1965, after overseeing the Sewa of the first four stories [4]. Subsequently, the remaining five stories were completed under the guidance of Sant Baba Santokh Singh Ji and Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji [4]. On July 11, 1987, after the passing of Sant Baba Santokh Singh Ji, the Sewa of this Asthan (place) was entrusted to Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji by the Nagar (town) and Panchayat [4]. Since then, the Sewa of this Asthan has been operating under the management of the Kalgidhar Trust Baru Sahib under the leadership of Baba Ji [4]. Following the Akal Chalana (passing) of Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji on January 29, 2022, the Sewa of this sacred place was handed over to Bhai Jagjit Singh Ji on February 10, 2022, by the collective Sangat of the town and area [5]. Currently, all Sewas are being performed here with the support of the Sangat under the able guidance of Bhai Jagjit Singh Ji through the Kalgidhar Trust Baru Sahib [5].

Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj (1866-1927)
Born on March 17, 1866, in Pind Cheema Sahib, Tehsil Sunam, District Sangrur, Punjab, to father S. Karam Singh Ji and mother Bholi Kaur Ji [2]. He established a school for girls in Mastuana Sahib in 1906 [2, 12]. He also established Akal Degree College in Mastuana Sahib [12]. He administered Amrit (holy nectar) to 1.4 million people, inducting them into the Khalsa Panth [12]. He laid the foundation stone of Banaras Hindu University [12, 13]. He undertook непрерывное (uninterrupted) Nam Simran (remembrance of God’s name) for the alleviation of human suffering [12]. He integrated worldly and spiritual education for the complete development of human beings [12]. He facilitated the Sewa of historical Gurudwaras [12, 14]. In 1883, following the orders of his parents and the divine will, he joined the Fauj (army) in Ferozepur [12]. Sant Ji connected Sangats in Pathohar, Rawalpindi, Malwa, Doaba, Majha, Delhi, and every part of the country with the Guru’s word [14]. In 1888, he left his service in the Fauj and traveled on foot from Dera Ghazi Khan to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded [14]. He facilitated great Sewa at Gur Sagar Mastuana, Guru Kashi Damdama Sahib, and many other Gurudwaras [14]. He established Mastuana Sahib as a major center of Sikhism, initiating the study of both worldly sciences and the Brahm-Vidya (divine knowledge) of Guru Nanak Sahib there [14]. He instructed Sant Teja Singh Ji to develop the Khalsa’s hidden Tapo Asthan (place of meditation) in the Nahan state of the Himalayan mountains, which Sant Teja Singh Ji later manifested in the form of Baru Sahib [14, 15]. He attained Sachkhand Pyana (passed away) on February 1, 1927 [15].
Important Teachings of Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj:
- Reciting Naam (God’s name) is the primary duty of all beings [16, 17].
- Constantly reciting Naam with full enthusiasm and force in the presence of Akal Purkh (the Timeless Being) generates an अद्भुत शक्ति (amazing power) that sustains countless suns, moons, realms, universes, and the entire creation [18].
- Method of Naam Simran (remembrance of God’s name): Begin by reciting aloud with the tongue, understanding Akal Purkh to be present within or nearby. Then, close the lips and slowly recite “Waheguru” in the consciousness. The third stage involves breathing: with each inhale, “Wahi” goes in, and with each exhale, “Guru” goes out [18, 19].
- Ridhi Sidhi (worldly powers) are nothing; the spiritual state is far beyond them [8, 20].
- Humility and compassion do not come without Sewa (selfless service) [20].
- Trikuti Khulna (opening of the third eye) or attaining Turia Pad (the fourth state) is rising above the three qualities of Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva. Dasam Dwar Khulna (opening of the tenth gate) is when one’s consciousness reaches the Nirankar (formless) [20].
- “Sabdu Guru Surat Dhuni Chela” (The Word is the Guru, consciousness the disciple) [21]. The Shabad (divine word) is the Guru from beginning to end. The physical body is never the Guru. Gurmukhs (God-oriented individuals), Brahm Gyanis (knower of God), and Mahapurshs (great beings) are in the form of the Shabad, not the physical body. Therefore, worshipping the physical body is incorrect [21]. “Bani Guru Guru Hai Bani Vich Bani Amrit Sare” (The Word is the Guru, the Guru is the Word, within the Word is all the nectar of immortality) [21].

In 1932, he initiated the ساخت (construction) of Gurdwara Nanaksar Sahib at Cheema Sahib, a place sanctified by the touch of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s feet and blessed by Sant Attar Singh Ji through Jap-Tap [23]. - Purifying the inner self [26].
- Daily Gurmat practice: Waking up in the Amrit Vela (three hours before sunrise), bathing, practicing the Waheguru Gurmantra, reciting Nitnem (daily prayers), and attending Guru’s Diwan (congregation) [26, 27]. Reciting Rehras Sahib in the evening, attending Diwan, and reciting Kirtan Sohila before sleeping [27]. Continuously practicing Gur Shabad (Guru’s word) while working, walking, sitting, and standing throughout the day. Earning a righteous living and donating Dasvandh (one-tenth of income) [27].
- Four things along with Simran (remembrance) and Kirtan (singing hymns) [27, 28]:
- “Ghal Khae Kich Hathahu De” (Earn your living by the sweat of your brow and give something in charity) [28].
- “Mithat Neevi Nanaka Gun Changaiya Tatt” (Sweetness and humility, O Nanak, are the essence of good virtues) [28].
- “Farida Je Tu Akal Latifu Kale Likh Na Lekh, Apnivre Girevan Mih Sir Neevan Kar Dekh” (Farid, if you consider yourself wise, do not write bad deeds. Look into your own collar and see) [28].
- “Daya Jave Jia Ki Kich Punnu Daan Karei” (Show compassion to all beings and perform some good deeds and charity) [28].
- Enduring someone’s criticism is the highest form of Tap (austerity) [29].
- The ‘Sahaj-Avastha’ (state of equipoise of the mind) comes through Simran with every breath [30].
