Birth
Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj Mastuane Wale has been one of the great personalities of the twentieth century, who has been mentioned in ‘Sau Sakhi’ as ‘Attar Singh Soora’. He was born in 1866 in village Cheema, district Sangrur (Punjab) to mother Bholi Ji and father Karam Singh.
Childhood
At a very young age, he would make a rosary of pieces of cloth and recite the Divine Name. He would say, “I will not study any other education, I will study only the true education”. He did not study in any school but only learned Gurmukhi from Bhai Buta Singh Ji from the Nirmala Dera of the village.
When grown-up, he worked in fields, performed household chores, and grazed cattle. While grazing cattle, he would never hit the cattle with a stick, but would hit them lovingly with a cloth. He loved all and remained immersed in Divine Name. Once a Sadhu saw the Padam Rekha, the line of luck on the sole of foot, of the child saint, who was sleeping while grazing cattle, and bowed to him, saying, “He will be a great personality in front of whom even the kings and emperors will bow down”.

ਜਨਮ:
ਸੰਤ ਅਤਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਮਸਤੂਆਣੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਵੀਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਮਹਾਨ ਮਹਾਂਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਜਿੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਿਕਰ ‘ਸੌ ਸਾਖੀ’ ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਅਤਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੂਰਾ’ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ। ਆਪ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਿੰਡ ਚੀਮਾਂ, ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਸੰਗਰੂਰ (ਪੰਜਾਬ) ਵਿਖੇ ੧੮੬੬ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਤਾ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਇਆ।
ਬਚਪਨ:
ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਲੀਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ। ਆਪ ਜੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ, “ਅਸੀਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਨੀ, ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਂਗੇ”। ਆਪ ਜੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ, ਕੇਵਲ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਮਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਡੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਭਾਈ ਬੂਟਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ।
ਵੱਡੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ, ਘਰ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ-ਕਾਜ ਕਰਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਡੰਗਰ ਚਾਰਦੇ। ਡੰਗਰ ਚਾਰਦਿਆਂ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਕਦੇ ਡੰਗਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਡੰਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾ ਮਾਰਦੇ, ਸਗੋਂ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹਿੱਕਦੇ। ਆਪ ਜੀ ਸਭ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ। ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰੀ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਧੂ ਨੇ ਬਾਲਕ ਸੰਤ, ਜੋ ਡੰਗਰ ਚਾਰਦਿਆਂ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਦਮ-ਰੇਖਾ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਬੜਾ ਭਾਰੀ ਮਹਾਂਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ, ਜਿਸ ਅੱਗੇ ਰਾਜੇ-ਮਹਾਰਾਜੇ ਵੀ ਨਿਵਣਗੇ।
